FAQ – Common Questions About Digital Art and NFTs
What Is Digital Art?
Digital art is a creative language born and developed through technological tools: computers and software and algorithms and artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional art it doesn’t rely on physical materials but uses pixels or data and code as its expressive medium. Digital art has a long and fascinating history shaped by pioneers and styles that evolved over decades leading to today’s vibrant blend of digital and contemporary aesthetics — where high-tech creative tools meet decentralized forms of distribution.
In my artistic practice I explore how the digital realm can reflect and reinterpret contemporary reality turning technology into a poetic medium.
What Does NFT Mean?
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token — a digital certificate recorded on the blockchain that verifies the ownership and authenticity of a digital artwork.
An NFT is not the artwork itself but its unique certificate — similar to a notarial deed in the art world. It allows collectors and artists to trade digital works in a transparent and traceable way.
NFTs have introduced an efficient and coherent answer to the key principles of collecting and the art market: ownership - provenance and authenticity. For the first time the digital art world has a clear and functional solution for managing intangible assets like videos - images and multimedia works.
What Is the role of Blockchain in Art?
The blockchain is a public, decentralized ledger that ensures the traceability and authenticity of digital artworks.
Every transaction or change of ownership is recorded immutably.
In my work, I use blockchain not only as a tool for transparency but also as a conceptual element — a medium that tells the story of the relationship between art and technology and trust. Today blockchain represents one of the most reliable systems for securely storing and transferring digital assets: from artworks and certifications to digital currencies.
Can an NFT Artwork Exist in the Physical World?
Yes. Many of my works combine digital and physical elements — videos - prints - objects or installations derived from the original digital file.
In this way, the NFT becomes the certified origin of an artistic project that can exist both online and offline — a bridge between two creative dimensions. In some cases the result is called Phygital meaning both physical and digital; seamlessly blending the two worlds. In others the NFT is linked to a physical artwork to expand its meaning - scope or functionality — sometimes even as part of innovative marketing or curatorial strategies.
Where Can I Sell My Digital Artworks?
I regularly exhibit my work in galleries and art shows in Italy and abroad; as well as on selected digital art platforms. Some of my pieces are displayed on NFT marketplaces; while others are experienced through digital frames; projectors or LED walls.
At my own gallery — Futura Art Gallery in Pietrasanta, Tuscany — visitors can explore ongoing projects and engage in conversations about digital art. The gallery presents a curatorial path that connects past avant-gardes with the new frontiers of transmedia art.
How Do You Collect Digital Art?
Collecting digital art means owning a unique asset that represents a specific artwork. You need a digital wallet to store it and an NFT marketplace to purchase it.
Many collectors today combine digital and physical works; creating hybrid collections that reflect a new idea of contemporary collecting.
As a curator and consultant in this field; I guide collectors through every step of the acquisition process — especially those new to the space — helping them avoid technical errors or potential scams that could harm their investment.
Can Artificial Intelligence Be Considered an Artist?
Artificial intelligence is a creative tool not an artist. It generates forms and images but it is the human artist who chooses and interprets and gives meaning to the result.
In my research I use AI as a lens — not to replace the human hand but to expand perception. I value artists who use AI as a production tool often in combination with others without letting it dominate their creative process.
Artists who truly master algorithmic tools avoid the trap of producing mannerist or repetitive works. Generative art today offers unprecedented creative possibilities and total expressive freedom to those who can handle its complexity.
What Differentiates a Digital Artist from a Designer?
A digital artist works with poetic and critical intent exploring the meaning and language of technology. Behind every artwork lies research or experimentation and conceptual development — often involving many discarded attempts.
A designer instead uses similar tools to solve functional problems. The difference isn’t technical but conceptual: digital art questions; design answers.
What Is the Future of Digital Art?
Digital art is becoming an integral part of the contemporary art landscape.
I believe the future will be hybrid and decentralized - where artworks live across physical and virtual spaces and technology itself becomes an artistic material much like marble or paint once were.
My hope is that digital art will continue to gain full recognition within the contemporary art world just as video art and photography did in the past.
